Introduction

Diseases of the venous systems are common among the Indian population and results in considerable morbidity. Almost more than half of the middle aged populations have minor stigmata of venous disease but less that half of them have visible varicose veins. The incidence of varicose veins increases with age.

Normal Venous Anatomy

If constitutes the deep venous system and superficial system. The superficial veins of the lower extremity are the great and small saphenous veins & their tributaries. Great saphenous vein is the large superficial vein of the leg & thigh & originates from dorsal venous arch of the foot & after running up the medial side of the leg & thigh it opens though the saphenous opening into the femoral vein. Small saphenous veins originates from dorsal venous arch of foot & courses along lateral aspect of foor & runs along posterior aspect of leg.
